March 8, Saturday: Windy climbing

A great sense of accomplishment completing the 49 miles from Alpine to Jacumba, CA -- with a headwind of 30 mph gusting to 42 mph and a total climb of 5400 feet.  We felt like such heroes at the end. However, it was odd to ride in my lowest gear for most of the day!  The countryside is dry, rocky, and desert-like.  In the first picture below, you can see the smoke from a wildfire in the background. We are a stone's throw from Mexico in Jacumba and had good views of the long, ugly fence that has been built along the border. Plenty of Border Patrol vehicles in this area.  My bicycle is behaving pretty well, so far.

  1. Glad to see that you finally found some decent hills! Nothing like "on-the-ride" training. Best wishes, Mary H
