April 12, Saturday, day 37: Louisiana!

77 miles today from Silsbee Texas to Lake Charles Louisiana in partly sunny and very comfortable weather.  And crossing the Sabine river into Louisiana and then for several miles, I was absolutely certain that we would be eaten by mosquitoes or alligators. It was definitely low land, swamps, standing water.  Unfortunately the bridges were only two lanes with no shoulder so I didn't get any good pictures of the brownish water.

The route gradually evolved into farmlands and actually had some nice yellow flowers along the side of the road. Here are some of their happy faces!

I am already thinking about home at Harbour Ridge, especially hole number five on the River Ridge course. In case we need another dead tree for the center of the fairway, I have a candidate.

Overall, it was a pretty good day. Couldn't stand one more hotel breakfast, so my roommate and I walked to McDonald's for a sausage and egg McMuffin. I got my Mexican Coke in the morning for a pick me up, and ended up at Burger King outside of Lake Charles for lunch. That was pure happenstance because I got lost and had to ask for directions.  Another kind stranger helped me out. His eyes bugged out when he saw the 77 mile route on the cue sheet. And he and a friend bowed to me when I told him we were coming from San Diego en route to St. Augustine Florida. It's kind of fun to watch the reaction after conveying that piece of info.  Then, as is typical, they had a million questions for me which I gladly answered.

Margarita party tonight. In honor of crossing a state line, or perhaps for finally getting out of Texas.

  1. Great pictures and wonderful story line. Saw Dan today and the words were all "Fantastic" and "Fabulous" when describing his trip and yours. Way to go!
    Keep it up!
