April 14, Monday, Day 39: Liking LA, finally

94 miles today from Lafayette to St. Francisville, LA, in mostly cloudy weather, then some T-storms at the end of the day. Roads were winding, scenery interesting, WIND AT OUR BACKS for most of the ride. Yay!  On such a long ride, the mind wanders.  At 360 full pedal strokes per mile, 100 miles is 36000 strokes.  Aieee!

The big thing for the day was crossing the Mississippi River.  Sheila and I were quite proud of ourselves and this milestone of the trip.

Here is a picture of a crawfish farm.  It is crawfish harvesting season now; just about every roadside business offers boiled crawfish.  Nevertheless, there is a shortage of crawfish due to the cold winter.  The nature of roadkill changes near these flooded fields, from opossum and armadillo to snakes of all varieties.  (Actually Louisiana roadkill is a far cry from the deer and jackrabbits we saw in Texas.). Note the ducks in the field.

Other scenery from the ride.

Redwinged blackbirds and purple martins all over.  Also some cattle egrets.

Tonight's lodging is the Butler Greenwood Plantation B & B.  Pretty cottages.  Coming in to the plantation in the rain though was like "If you go out in the woods today..." From the teddy bears picnic.  Feels haunted.  We were greeted by the resident peacock.

It was a good day for me.  Got a good night's sleep, ate a good breakfast (the sausage, egg, biscuit routine sticks to your ribs). Stopped for "a proper lunch." Lots of energy with that combination and a few Tylenol.  Could have kept riding beyond the 94 miles were it not for the rain.  Tomorrow is a rest day.  Aside from laundry and finding a somewhat interesting topic for this blog, I will probably forage for food.

  1. 94 miles, WOW! You rock! Can't believe how far you have gotten. Love all the scenery and little stories you have collected, keep them coming.
    Happy pedaling,
